Founder

1970 John Colman

In 1964, John Colman, an Australian Patrol Officer and entrepreneur, obtained an Agricultural Lease called 'Madan' locally named after a small hill on the Estate.

During the excavation of over 40 miles of drains in marshlands, numerous prehistoric stone implements and tools were discovered, providing evidence of early land use in the area. The region, including Madan, is inextricably linked to a sophisticated agrarian civilization spanning over 10,000 years, as indicated by findings from the nearby interdisciplinary excavations conducted at the esteemed UNESCO World Heritage site of Kuk Archaeological Research Station by Australian National University and Pittsburgh University. Madan holds a significant place within this culturally rich heritage.

Madan Estate boasts a favorable microclimate and nutrient-rich volcanic soils, making it an exceptional location for coffee production. Nestled between two rivers, on the floor of a verdant valley, bounded by towering ranges, standing tall and silent as ancient setinels watching over our estate, a harmonious sanctuary of thriving biodiversity, of birds insects and other wildlife carefully preserved, where the ancient art of human cultivation is seamlessly balanced with nature's bounty. Vast stretches of verdant fields bear witness to meticulous chemical-free care and attention bestowed upon thriving coffee trees, and natural bushland reserves, allowing a balanced ecosystem for our coffee. Only the vibrantly ripe cherries are tenderly handpicked, and processed, honouring age old coffee traditions, and yet unafraid to innovate for better quality.
